The Abstract for the coming Friday seminar appears below. This Friday's talk begins to take up some of the issues which will be debated at the ASFLA conference planned for December this year, titled Language-Brain-Culture. This weeks seminar will be followed up next week by a presentation on the topic of language and the brain, in which Christian Matthiessen will discuss on early paper of Terrence Deacon, on the co-evolution of language and the brain. Deacon is one of the plenary speakers for the December conference

Abstract
The functional principles and systemic networks of SF theory are drawing attention in the development of brain modelling and intelligent systems. This should not be surprising - the brain is social; the brain grows by language; language is a group phenomenon; and, since the 1960s, Sydney Lamb has modified Halliday's networks (in Stratificational Linguistics) to produce a comprehensive, network based account of the interaction of brains, language and culture. Another initiative in these directions has come out of the colloboration between Michael Halliday and Michio Sugeno, a specialist in "fuzzy" systems and robotics, and now a project leader in Brain Sciences Institute of RIKEN Institute in Tokyo. Some members of the RIKEN research team (Hiroko Fujihiro, Yusuke Takahashi, Ichiro Kobayashi), and their collaborators from Macquarie University (David Butt, Christian Matthiessen, Wu Canzhong) and from UNSW (Kazuhiro Teruya), will be presenting their ideas and raising questions about the new ways in which the brain is being conceptualized, ways that may produce a new synthesis of cognitive and social perspectives on language.
